RECREATE

For those of you new to the Hackensack and tidal rivers in general, it's easier and more pleasant to launch at high tide. Use a tide chart. From Hackensack south much of the river is wide enough for wind to be an issue as well. Feel free to pay back the herculean effort of creating this map by picking up trash by yourself or joining the Hackensack River Keeper for their clean-ups.
The Hackensack is canoeable unimpeded as far north as northern River Edge where a log boom-and the garbage it collects-blocks the river. Another boom above Elm Street and 100 yards below 3' dam in Oredell is often impassable. Portaging for another mile of river is possible. As of fall '08 the highest recommended start is the River Edge Boat launch.
